Today’s track: Bakermat — Baianá
When I was younger, my stepmom Linda called me over to the den in the basement. She was watching Cirque du Soleil and asked what I thought. I said, “It’s pretty weird.”
She said, “It’s not weird. It’s just different.”
Shortly after, our family took a trip to Chicago. Heard some great blues and jazz, ate some real pizza, hit a few museums, and saw Cirque du Soleil. Had a great time. Since then I’ve seen them four or five times. Still haven’t caught the aquatic one — but I think that one’s probably pretty dope.
That little moment stuck. It’s the Ted Lasso line — be more curious and less judgmental.
Professionally, a lot of realtors really don’t understand what I’m doing, or how, or why. Same in the investment world — it just doesn’t make sense to them.
If I submit a significant amount of LOIs, I get an array of responses. A lot of “fuck you.” A lot of no response at all. Outright rejection. Only a handful are actually curious instead of judgmental — and the rest are the ones who could stand to be a little more curious and a little less judgmental.
Some of them come back like, “It was so unprofessional of you. You should have called me. You should have texted me.”
And I always have to be like — you’re right. You’re so right. I’m an idiot.
I don’t actually say I’m a bad agent. But I want them to think it. Because what I’m not going to tell them is that I sent out three hundred other offers from my client that all met their buy box. So I have to be fine letting there be egg on my face.
Back in the day, before AI, Colleen and I would spend real time on our listing description write-ups. We’d try to be clever, work in puns. It was an art. Some realtors made fun of it — and in the group texts they were often poking fun at us.

But it worked. The listings were getting shared. The descriptions were resonating with people. Buyers would reach out and mention they enjoyed the wit.
I think it served its purpose. And it was fun.
I love aligning fun with what I’m doing in business. If you do too, reach out let’s get weird and be different.

PS: What’s the thing you do in your work that other people think is weird — but quietly works? Colleen is starting to keep a list of everything I tell her is really smart!
