Today’s track: Little Room — The White Stripes

I checked my average screen time this morning. Four and a half hours a day.

That’s a part-time job spent staring at a screen. Digest, digest, digest. Scroll, scroll, scroll.

And I can’t feel good when that’s the number. Taking in that much and making nothing back — it eats at me.

Because here’s what I’ve figured out about myself: I have to create something to feel like myself.

So lately I’ve been doing the opposite of scrolling. I’ve been building.

I’ve written three horror short stories — working on the fourth.

I’ve been flushing out NIL, recruiting, and Billy Beane–style ideas with Eric Payne.

HireMySub is my first real project putting AI agents to work — figuring out what these things actually do once you stop reading about them and start using them.

At Winner Realty I’m working with our agents on growing their business and reach, and folding AI into how they work and live.

And we’re completely rebuilding the dispo side of OffMarket.deals — me, Jason, and Colleen, tearing it down and putting it back together better.

I’m enjoying putting my brain to use. Knowing me, somewhere in all this I’ll write a few songs too.

None of that happens on a screen I’m just consuming. It happens when I close the apps and make something.

And look at every one of those projects — Eric, Jason, Colleen, our agents. There’s a name in each one. That’s not an accident. It’s a lot easier to create when someone else is excited about it too. Find somebody to build it with. Someone you can excitedly share progress with. The collaboration is half the fuel.

So take this terrific Tuesday and pick one thing to build. Something you’d actually be proud of.

It lasts longer than an episode of Netflix. Longer than an hour of swiping. And that spark you get when you put it out into the world and somebody digs it? Beats pissing your life away on TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram every time.

Zappa nailed it:

“Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible.”

You don’t make anything worth making by consuming what everyone else already made. Go deviate. Build the thing.

Enthusiastically,

PS: Couple things worth your screen time today — Redfin says home prices are picking up again, and Governor Beshear just announced Kentucky’s biggest tourism year ever: four straight years of record growth, nearly $15 billion in economic impact, 81 million travelers, almost 97,000 jobs. If you’ve been sitting on a move, a deal, or just a question about the market grab a time on my calendar. Let’s talk it through!
